Beluran farmers organization, Nestlin will market bird nests
BELURAN: Beluran Region Farmers Organization (PPK) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nestlin Malaysia Sdn Bhd to market Beluran Swift nests worth RM4 million annually for a period of five year.
Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee attended the signing ceremony held alongside the launch of the Beluran Swiftlets Festival in Sabah.
“They (the bird’s nest operators in Beluran) can sell directly to PPK at a better price without manipulation by middlemen,” Ronald told reporters after officiating at the launch of the festival.
“In Beluran alone, there are 1,100 bird nests cultivated by the Beluran people and this is 25% of the total number of bird nests in Sabah,” he said.
Ronald said the collaboration will focus on five aspects including expertise sharing, management strategy, infrastructure sharing, consulting services and product commercialization.
Regarding the Beluran Switflets Festival, Ronald said that it is organized at the same time as the 50th anniversary of the Agricultural Organizations Authority.
He said the program is about the bird’s nest and agribusiness and involves PPK as the program aims to promote the swiftlet industry within the rural agribusiness community which forms the bulk of the community agricultural.
The program also directly disseminates information on the latest government approaches and policies to the local community.
Earlier, Ronald inaugurated the Beluran PPK Swiflets Nest Processing Center which will benefit over 800 bird nest operators and create job opportunities for at least 50 farmer children in the area.
According to him, the processing center, now fully operational in conjunction with Nestlin Malaysia, was developed by the Farmers Organization Authority with an allocation of RM1.4 million and has a monthly production capacity of 100 kg. — Bernama
